Receiving any type of chronic diagnosis can be overwhelming (although maybe a few of us actually felt a sense of relief to actually have an answer as to what’s been “going on” with us!) Am I right?
Nevertheless, many mixed emotions roll-in and we start asking ourselves (& our doctors) lots of questions. The truth is, we all go through a different journey, yet face similar fears. Thinking back upon mine, I have created a short guide that I would offer someone with a new similar diagnosis, seeking guidance and support to begin their healing journey…
Evaluate your Mindset:
What are you feeling? Why are you having those feelings? Are you feeling sorry for yourself? Are you scared? Do you just want to “give up”? These are common anxious thoughts for many newly diagnosed. But the truth is that your mind and your body have the power to overcome this, too!
Take on the mindset of just that: YOU CAN HEAL!
I turned my fears in to determination and it was the first best thing, I did!
Take a Look at your Doctor:
Many Western/Conventional physicians’ “plan of action” will be to just order more blood tests and if needed, (for those with thyroiditis) prescribe thyroid hormone replacement drugs (or whatever relevant drugs for your specific condition.) Although this may be needed, you may also want to look for an integrative medicine physician or a “functional” doctor if your goals include not just popping pills everyday and going on with life still very lethargic and not thriving as you should (and can!).
Functional medicine focuses on optimal functioning of the body and its organs, this includes new treatments for all autoimmune conditions. For some, such doctors or clinics may not be covered by insurances. If so, plan on doing lots of your own research and formulating a financial plan to be able to find some outside/other perspectives and plan of action.
Examine your Diet:
The Autoimmune Protocol Diet is a very powerful tool based on the research of Dr. Sarah Ballantyne (aka, “The Paleo Mom”). AIP aims at healing, and that begins with an elimination diet that removes all potential foods that could be causing immune responses within your body (and causing damage).
You want to focus on healing and detoxing. I also recommend adopting the habit of making and drinking homemade bone broth daily! It is an amazing form of healing and love for your insides (not to mention plenty other youth-inducing benefits!)
Find Support & Join the AIP Community:
There are LOTS of us! The key to a successful change of habitual + damaging eating habits, is having support. And what’s better than a bunch of other people who have all “been there” or currently still struggling and pushing through? I promise you will find inspiration from so many others who are THRIVING!
Get an Instagram account if you don’t already have one, search hashtags like #AIP, #autoimmuneprotocol, #hashimotos, #whole30 (and any others for your specific condition). Get connected, make friends, you will feel so much relief knowing that you are not alone.
Work on Self-Love:
You are, and always will be your number 1 Advocate. No one will care about your overall well-being more than yourself! For heaven’s sake, your body is the house, the vessel for your soul throughout this limited time you have on Earth. Learn what it takes to give it what it truly needs to flourish!
Start new healthy habits and routines, like carving out daily time to just be alone and focus on your feelings. Be present-minded, find a local yoga studio, learn to meditate, take warm detox baths in candlelight, Love-thyself!
Light & Love,
